One year wrap-up in 905 words ^_^

So today marks one year since I started this weight loss journey and decided to change my lifestyle to a healthier one FOR GOOD.  Though I did my first 21 Day Fix workout on February 24, 2014, I have to backtrack a little bit to when my challenge pack first arrived.  There was one bigger book with a whole lot of colors and lists, and like three little pamphets, plus three dvds, a bunch of containers that seemed so tiny, a shaker cup and this giant bag of Shakeology.  I was very nervous and trepidatious at first, because everything else I had been trying hadn’t worked.  I’d lose some weight then gain it right back the second I looked at chocolate cake or pizza.  It was logical to be skeptical right?  But then I sat down and started calculating.  TWO THOUSAND CALORIES.  The program had me eating five times a day and 2000 calories.  Sheyeah right.  I had literally been shooting for 1200 ever since I could remember…but I decided that I had to give it the three weeks and put my trust in something unknown to see what it could do.

My coach had added me to a private online accountability group and we had to check in, and show pictures of our food, and take sweaty selfies, and share our experiences with each other.  Not only had weight loss and fitness been a pretty individual thing for me up until that point, but a lot of the other challengers didn’t have much to lose and I felt like the token fat chick.  But I quickly learned a lot of things about myself and others in just those three weeks.  The first thing I learned was, just because someone is a size 2 doesn’t mean they are happy with their body.  I was confused why someone so small would want to be doing a diet and exercise program.  I had assumed that everyone did Beachbody programs because they wanted to lose weight.  Little did I know that the nutrition plans that were provided with the programs not only could help someone lose weight, but could assist in maintaining and even GAINING weight!  And the workout programs all have a modifier to make things lower impact, while there’s always some over-zealous person on screen to amp things up a bit, too.  And I was also participating in this group with some ladies that were very comfortable with their size 18 bodies, but just wanted to be healthier wives, moms, lovers, etc.  I quickly learned that everyone is on their own journey, and you should never compare your journey to anyone else’s.  We all have different steps to follow, and even missteps we will take along the way.  We have different reasons and motivation that push us in the directions we go, and temptations that will drive us backward if we let them.

Those little containers weren’t so little after I realized how much food you really could eat when it was fueling your body for optimal nutrition and health.  Long gone were the days of starving myself on purpose, eating 1200 calories without taking into account the workout I did for the day, or chain-smoking to keep myself from overeating.  This was a much more advanced way of thinking but strangely simplistic and easy to follow once I got the hang of it.  The workouts kicked my ass, but in all honesty I hadn’t really put forth the effort I needed to start burning fat and raising my metabolism to help me from the inside out.   And 21 days later I was 6 pounds and 9.5 inches smaller and on my way to being healthier, happier, and more confident.  It was then that I made the decision to become a coach because I had found a solution that works and it was like the Fountain of Youth…I just needed to share it with everyone so they could see results, too.

Fast foward to today and here’s a quick recap of my accomplishments over the past 365 days, of which I’m pretty darn proud…

–I completed three dedicated rounds of the 21 Day Fix
–I nailed the 14-week Focus T25 program (Alpha, Beta, and Gamma)
–I dabbled in a TurboFire/PiYo hybrid while training for the half
–Oh yeah…I trained 12 weeks for and completed a half marathon (with no walking)
–I am three days from completing the 60 day Les Mills Combat program
–I am about to start 21 Day Fix Extreme on Monday, March 2nd
–I now coach 133 people and lead a team of 11 coaches
-I have lost 49.1 pounds and 36 inches.
-I went from a size 18 to a size 10; XL to medium.
-I have more confidence, I’m healthier,  I have plenty of energy to complete my tasks, my body is able to handle more than it ever could, and I’m happier.

And my journey is not over yet. No, I didn’t quite make it to fifty pounds before my one year, like I had imagined, but with everything else that I’ve gained (and lost) this year, I could hardly be disappointed in myself.  I’ve worked really hard, but played really hard, too.  I’m not perfect.  I make mistakes.  And I’ll be the first to admit that some of the choices I make still aren’t the healthiest.  But I make it work and I know how to reel it back in and get back on track.  This isn’t just a diet or a 21 day program…it’s a lifestyle.  And I’m never going back.

That time of year…

The holidays are here and if you’re anything like me (and millions of others), you’re confronted with temptations daily.  It is also the time of year that most people start thinking about what they have accomplished in the past 11 months and begin making resolutions for the next year.   And though I tend to focus on health, fitness, and weight loss a majority of the time, we obviously focus on a lot of different aspects when it comes to accomplishments and resolutions.  But not being happy with the skin you’re in can bring a lot of stress, negative feelings, and poor decisions that can make it even harder to reach your goals and achieve your accomplishments, whether they are health related or not!

There are a lot of people that have approached me for support lately, and I am more than happy to help!  It’s why I got into coaching in the first place – because I saw success and had a lot to share with others.   But a lot of times I’m reminded that everyone is on their own journey and approaches things differently.  Each person has different things on his/her plate – stress, time management, planning, activity, family, etc.  There are a few quotes I feel are very important to remember at this time of year and every other day, as well:

1. “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.”
I love to share my results and the success stories of others, but many of us have been on this journey for awhile.  I have been working on my 47+ pound and 32+ inch loss since February 24th.  Others have been working longer, others less…and we all have different goals and are reaching different milestones.  When I started I wanted to lose 10 pounds.  When I got to that point, I made that goal 25, then 30, then 40, now 50.  I realized that I had the potential to do something more, but I didn’t want to set myself up for failure, since I knew that it was up to ME and no one else to get me where I wanted to be.  I saw the success of others and used it as inspiration and motivation to start my own journey to success.  I shared my frustrations, asked questions, tried new things, and let go of old practices.  It was only through carving my own path that I was able to learn anything, not by comparing myself to someone else.   And it might not be weight loss you’re trying to achieve.  You may be struggling with anorexia and want to know proper nutrition to get healthier, or you may already be thin but want to add muscle to your physique.  Set your goals and know what it takes to achieve them.  And understanding that there are no quick fixes (that last in the longterm) is essential.  For example, if you think of it as a diet, that puts an expiration date on your timeline.  Or if doing cardio makes you sick to your stomach, try yoga!  Make it a lifestyle change and strive to do better than yesterday, every day.

2. “Your WHY needs to be stronger than your addictions.”

While we don’t want to call them addictions, there are a lot of things done daily that can be considered as such.  Trips to Starbucks or Tim Horton’s, Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme, fast food chains, and even sit-down convenience restaurants.  For me it was sugary breakfast cereal and convenience foods for lunches like cinnamon applesauce, microwaveable diet meals, and snack bars.  Be stronger than those addictions (WANTS) and focus on your NEEDS.  And know what you need to do to reach your goals by focusing on a WHY.  WHY are you trying to (lose weight, get healthy, get fit)?  What propels you?  What motivates you?  What is going to help make this stick THIS TIME?  While I’m working to lose my excess weight before I get pregnant with my first child, you may be working toward a different goal.  Of the people I’m supporting right now, one wants to lose the baby weight from her last child, one is working on feeling sexier in a new dress for her vow renewal next year, and one is even working on losing enough weight to qualify for weight reduction surgery.  Figure out your WHY and be STRONGER than your addictions…AND your excuses.

And this brings us to this…
3.  “The only thing standing in the way of your success is your behavior.”
We can blame genetics, lifestyle, budget, opportunity, age, gender, race, or experience.  Or you can remember that YOU are the only thing that stands in your way.  The rest are just excuses.  Yup, I said it.   And for every excuse you give me, I can come right back with a success story of someone who made it happen.  YOU can make it happen, if you are willing to put in the effort.  If you’re not, that’s fine!  Like I said, I understand we all handle things differently, and must do things on our own time and in our own way.  But just know that there are options if you are willing, and it doesn’t have to include oodles of money, hours a day, duct-taping your mouth, or ritual sacrifice.

Motivation Monday

In my challenge group, I’ve just started having everyone complete some sort of “task” every day to keep them accountable and make sure they’re checking in.  Monday is Motivation Monday where you post a picture or a quote that keeps you motivated.  So far those that have posted have shared a picture of how they looked in the past, a body they would like to achieve again.  But different things motivate people in different ways obviously.

I’ve been asked by a lot of people lately how I stay motivated to eat healthy, work out, stay active, etc.  I’ve posted before about having a WHY.  If you don’t have a reason for wanting to achieve your goal(s), then striving hard to achieve them might not be as easy as you’d hoped it would be.  Post pictures, sticky notes, quotes, anything to motivate you around your house in areas that you see the most.  Your bathroom mirror, your nightstand, the refrigerator, your car visor…any places that you will have a constant reminder of what you want to achieve your goal(s).  Maybe you have a special event coming up – wedding, reunion, family party.  Maybe you have a family history of a disorder or disease and you don’t want that same affliction.  Maybe you already have some type of condition that you want to help alleviate.  Maybe you want to get up and moving in hopes that it will motivate someone else in your household like your significant other, children, parents.  But whatever reason you have, make it first and foremost about YOU.

Don’t strive to be something different because of other people.  And don’t compare yourself to another person’s journey.  We all have different things that motivate us and frankly there will be others that just don’t care or don’t need to care (though I envy people with ridiculous metabolism haha).  By you sticking to what you need to do to achieve your goals, others will notice and many will look to you for inspiration.  For someone, you may be their only guidance and inspiration and that’s a strong and powerful thing.  I use that power not to exploit someone else, but to push myself further to achieve my goals, knowing that I’m not along in this journey…but I know it’s first and foremost about ME.

So, now that I’ve passed along my advice…what’s my motivation?  Specifically when I basically started this journey alone?  My husband and I want to have a baby soon and I know how much many of my friends struggled with losing the baby weight.  I had almost 80 pounds to lose and didn’t want to lose that PLUS the baby weight.  Plus, diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions run in my family and I can lessen the risk by being active and eating better.  Finally, my biggest push is to end the trend of obesity, which is the strongest thing Beachbody stands for.  Working in public education, I see more and more obsese kids every year and it sickens me to think that our society has made it easier for someone to be fat or unhealthy than it is to be fit and active.  The convenience of so many things has made our society lazy and sedentary.  It’s cheaper to get a burger and fries than it is to get a salad and bottle of water.  Our society is obsessed with quick fixes that help to alleviate some problems but worsen others.  I’ve seen friends turn to pills and other unhealthy means just because they thought nothing else worked.  Well, I’m proof that changing your eating habits and being more active can work.  There’s no secret to weight loss, just dedication.  I’m part of an amazing group of coaches, I have my own challenge group of fantastic ladies that keep each other (and me!) motivated, and the support of my family and friends is unparalleled.  I am extremely lucky to have all of this in my life and it keeps motivated every day to do what I can for others.  I hope you can find the motivation to achieve all of your goals, no matter what they are.  And if you need help sticking to your routine (or starting one!), I’m just a click, phone call, or message away 🙂
